A few days ago, I reported on a recent study of Roundup, the Monsanto herbicide, and how Roundup is involved in causing gluten intolerance and celiac disease.

http://jonrappoport.wordpress.com/2014/02/21/study-monsantos-roundup-causes-gluten-intolerance/

I emailed one of the co-authors of the study, Stephanie Seneff (MIT), and she replied. Her comments are more than interesting:

The complex set of symptoms associated with celiac disease are not well understood. If you take the point of view that the glyphosate [the main ingredient in Roundup] causes both the celiac and all the other symptoms, then everything starts to make sense.

Glyphosate’s disruption of CYP enzymes in the liver is a major contributor. This explains both a deficiency in activated vitamin D (epidemic in this country) and an excess of retinoic acid (leading to infertility problems and teratogenesis). It also explains impaired bile acid production and impaired ability to process fats in the gut. And it also explains system-wide sulfate deficiency which I believe is the key factor behind all modern diseases.

We propose in the paper (based on chemistry) that glyphosate binds to the gluten in wheat and disrupts its ability to be transformed into a much less allergenic form. The body develops an allergic reaction to the strange form of gluten that it encounters (not properly formed and bound to glyphosate) developing the intolerance that characterizes gluten disease. Our proposal has not been proven — as far as I can tell, no one has done the research to show or disprove this hypothesis.

The Matrix Revealed

There have also been essentially no studies to see if there is significant glyphosate residue in food, in water, in blood, in urine. These studies need to be done.

People are mostly unaware that there has been a recent change in agricultural practices whereby wheat, sugar cane, barley, and other common crops are sprayed with glyphosate just before the harvest for desiccation/ripening. This surely means that there’s a lot more residue in the foods derived from these crops than there used to be. Furthermore, the Roundup-Ready core crops of the processed food industry – corn, soy, sugar beets, canola — have caused a massive problem with “roundup-ready” weeds, such that more and more Roundup has to be applied to get the same effect. The increased use of glyphosate on corn and soy correlates extremely well with the rise in incidence of a host of modern diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, autism, Alzheimer’s, celiac disease, irritable bowel, celiac disease, kidney cancer, kidney failure, hepatitis C, pancreatic cancer, Parkinson’s disease and thyroid cancer.”

I want to make a distinction here. Stephanie Seneff, the co-author of the study, makes a case, in her published paper, that glyphosate is the cause of gluten intolerance and celiac disease. In her subsequent email to me, she proposes an explanation for HOW this causative chain takes place, and readily admits this is a hypothesis. But her hypothesis does not diminish the strength of her published study:

([Interdisciplinary Toxicology, http://www.intertox.sav.sk/, 2013, Vol. 6 (4), 159-184]: “Glyphosate, pathways to modern diseases II: Celiac sprue and gluten intolerance”)

(Click here for the .pdf document of the report. See also this link.)

Also, the use of Roundup on food crops before harvest, to “dry and ripen” them, is a vital topic. For example, I just received a note from the UK indicating that farmers use Roundup on potatoes before harvest. The Roundup goes to the tubers, which means people are eating extra herbicide.

  1. “the use of Roundup on food crops before harvest, to “dry and ripen” them, is a vital topic”

This is not a USDA-approved usage of glyphosate.

This is akin to using Rx for off-label, UN-approved uses, and it means that consumers are guinea pigs and Monsanto is a criminal entity. Where are the lawyers?

    • theodorewesson says:

wow! using glyphosate to “dry and ripen” the crops faster?!

Does anyone know the “active ingredient” in glyphosate that speeds up the drying and ripening?

I never knew there was an off-label use of glyphosate.

This opens up a whole new avenue of crime investigation.

My understanding is that as a herbicide, it kills the wheat plant. After a few days it dries out which makes it easier for the machinery to harvest the grain.

        • theodorewesson says:

Ah, thanks! That make sense… Killing the wheat plan _on their own timeline_ — by using the herbicide… instead of, waiting for the cold weather / first frost to kill the wheat plant. In both cases, ‘dead’ results in ‘dry’. And ‘dry’ is easier on the ‘machines’. It’s just business.

    • Bull pucky granny…the Whole purpose of Round up ready seeds is to sell Round up. Try and remember now that the USDA is simply a mouth piece for Monsanto. The USDA was bought and paid for long ago.

It’s called “forcing” — that is, when you stress a plant by killing it before it has fully matured, it forces the plant to put all remaining life energy into flowering, so that it can go to seed before it dies.

The usual rotation is, in any order, GMO+BT corn, GMO-soy, wheat, (repeat). In either case, a wheat crop will be followed by a crop of GMO corn or GMO soy.

Say a farmer applies glyphosate to non-GMO wheat 6 weeks before a normal harvest. The wheat plant has already built its stalk and has sent up its ovum but it still wants to mature before putting out the seeds. If the wheat plant can be stressed (yes, plants have consciousness about life) then the wheat plant will stop all normal development, and “push” its seed production ahead of schedule. It’s called “forcing” the plant to go to seed. All plants will do it. People who sell orchids do it to orchids. Tomatoes will do it … everything.

This results in a faster turnover for the wheat field, and in higher wheat production, measured by bulk weight. The wheat germ gathers in the glyphosate from a few weeks before, and the glyphosate ends up in our breads. Glyphosate is more that a herbicide. According to Don Huber, it’s one of the most powerful antibiotics known. Eventually it kills everything.

By forcing the wheat plants the farmer gets (a) a heavier yield (based on gross weight, and not on nutritional density); (b) he gets a faster turnaround on the acreage of that field (yield per unit of time), (c) he gets an early start on the next crop, also increasing its yield, and (d) he gets a jump on clearing out weeds under the wheat before planting the following crop, be it GMO corn or GMO soy.

The farmer also knows that the glyphosate is being uptaken by the wheat plant, and that he is therefore poisoning his consumers for profit.

That’s what I am saying. I say, “Go at it attorneys!! Make a fuss and make the public aware.” What is wrong with a society that would poison their people?? It makes me understand where FDA is in one group.. Pharmaceutical companies fund FDA (pay off the fox that is guarding our hen houses) and the Pharmaceutical companies are making lovely commercial explaining how they can cure all these maladies that the Food industry has created. Its a vicious circle and they are all evil as far as I am concerned.

It’s wonderful to see you reporting on Dr. Seneff’s work. She and Dr. Huber are really leading the way for the rest of us with their medical and nutritional understanding.

According to researcher Robyn O’Brian, when Monsanto applied for and got their patent on glyphosate, they described glyphosate as an antibiotic. All these years, I had been told it was a herbicide! It’s not. It’s a broad spectrum antibiotic. According to Dr. Huber, it’s probably the most powerful antibiotic ever unleashed. Grandma can’t have a miligram of an antibiotic if she gets an infection, because it might contaminate the groundwater, but farmers can purchase it and spray it, without any regulation, by the millions of tons per year. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robyn-o/nine-dirty-little-secrets_b_4808630.html?

There are some audio files of recent interviews that Dr. Seneff did with Dr. Mercola (1 hour) and Patrick Timpone (5 hours), where she describes her current research in a non technical way. They are REALLY worth googling. Her writing can be heavy going for some of us, like me. The audio interviews for us lay people will help. Her work is worth studying.

Thank you for sharing her work!

As a retired scientist I am concerned by the inaccurate science being published by supposedly reputable scientists that results in loss of life. Regulators take this data and approve some food for human consumption. If it can be shown that this fake data has caused loss of life, those who produced it should be charged with premeditated murder. […] and we may get better science.

  6. CAWS says:

While I agree that Roundup is a major contributor to human illness and soil destruction by making available minerals unabsorbable to plants; I don’t think this is the whole picture. Yes we are universally exposed to it but we are also universally exposed to fluoride ,mercury, arsenic ,lead & aluminum. These are all synergistic and combined become 100s of times more toxic than alone.
Try testing your hair or doing a 24 hr urine drop from Doctors Data [www.directlabs.com no doctor needed] and see what comes out. If the Environmental Group of Scientists found over 260 chemical toxins in the cord blood of newborn doctor’s children [presumably with proper nutrition & prenatal care] the what about those who are poor or even those who live on GMO farms? Add in smart meters, chemtrails, amalgams, vaccines, and 360+ fluorinated pharmaceuticals with permanent side effects and you have a perfect storm. [see slweb.org & click on FTRC link for list of drugs to avoid]
Stay away from dentists, doctors, public schools and start a big garden if you want to eat during the coming “bread basket drought”. If you don’t have a well consider collecting rainwater.

    • theodorewesson says:

and filter your rainwater with a high quality gravity fed filter or reverse osmosis process or ozone process — to get rid of the chemtrail aluminum and barium and strontium.

One of the findings of Dr Stephanie Seneff, published in Entropy 2013, 15, 1416-1463; doi:10.3390/e15041416, is that glyphosate consumption has the effect of blocking the guts ability to remove toxins from the system. It has many troubling effects, according to Dr. Don Huber of Purdue as well. He attributes the rise in autism to glyphosate overuse, and predicts that if the current trends continue, half of all children born in the US will manifest autism spectrum disorder in 12 years. (Have you noticed the articles normalizing autism?)
Glyphosate was originally patented as an antibiotic, and as a chelator. t kills weeds, (and destroys gut biota) by binding essential metals and minerals like magnesium. This leads to many mineral deficiency diseases, and slowly destroys the immune system, 85% of which is due to healthy gut biota. The soils are also stripped of minerals, and the food grown is less nutritious. Being mineral deficient makes humans more vulnerable to radioactive particles, as they are more readily absorbed by deficient bodies.
Just to counter all the bad news, the GAPs diet developed by Dr Natasha Campbell McBride in the UK does wonders to restore integrity to the gut wall and re establish healthy gut biota. Check out her important work online. She gave a wonderful lecture at the Westin Price Foundation Wise Traditions Conference in 2010 in London.

While there may be a causative link between glyphosate and toxicity (cell death, metabolic problems, etc.), and wondering whether there is a causative link between industrial chemicals like glyphosate and human metabolic disorders is an important question, papers like this are not the way to make the argument. No causative link is established in this paper. Indeed, the word “associated” shows up 38 times in the paper. This is not an unbiased review like it should be, and it’s the opposite of dispassionate science. The authors have their explanation, and all they’re doing is finding all the support they can for it. For example, the sources of the data upon which the graphs are based are not referenced in a way that they can be tracked down—no citations for the data sources in the Lit Cited. The figure captions are pathetic. Who is Nancy Swanson? These observations inspired my first red flag. I then looked at the journal and the authors. A similar version of this paper was published a few months earlier in the journal Entropy, an interdisciplinary free access online journal with a $1,352.00 price tag to publish (more later). One author is Anthony Samsel, a retired self-employed computer science consultant. What is his interest in glyphosate? According to The Web Of Science search engine, Samsel has only published two scientific papers. The other author is Stephanie Seneff, a 65-yr-old computer scientist at MIT. What is her interest in glyphosate? Her last eight articles have been published in the journal Entropy, which means she and her coauthors have spent $10,816.00 to publish in the last two years. What? The current version of this paper (the one I presented in class and have attached) is published in an obscure journal called Interdisciplinary Toxicology. Interdisciplinary Toxicology was started in 2008 by a Slovakian institute called the Institute of Experimental Pharmacology. More than half (93) of the 162 articles published in this journal in the last five years have never been cited and the average citations per paper is 2.2, mostly by seven papers, which have been cited a combined 113 times. Again, while the glyphosate-human toxicity question is an important one, and early empirical data do not look good for glyphosate, this publication does not establish any credibility. It in fact backfires. This whole paper has pseudoscience written all over it. I wish it were this simple to show empirically, convincingly, and repetitively that glyphosate causes gluten intolerance and celiac disease. But biased and pseudoscientific papers are not the way toward an answer.

I would like to see more exact information regarding the use of the term glyphosate. Is the compound being studied pure, or in the form of RoundUp? I understand the combination of materials in the latter are more harmful than pure glyphosate alone. Could someone please clarify this point for me?
