Did fracking cause the Hawaii volcano eruption?

Did fracking cause the Hawaii volcano eruption?

by Jon Rappoport

May 22, 2018

On the Big Island of Hawaii, where the Kilauea volcano has explosively erupted, there is a geothermal energy plant. It is the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) Plant, in Puna.

There is a long-running debate about whether PGV is fracking. The debate may be a matter of terminology, because in the geothermal process, as hawaiifracking.com reports, “…the drilling and the injection of cold water into hot rocks used in geothermal energy plants does fracture the rocks, which can induce earthquakes and through contamination of the atmosphere and water tables can affect our health and safety.”

Whether deep injection of fluid aims to capture oil, gas, or heat (geothermal), the beginning stage of the process is the same.

Earthquakes induced by this water-injection could obviously trigger a volcano.

For example, here is an alarming article about a geothermal project in Switzerland. Swissinfo.ch, December 10, 2009: “The authorities in canton Basel City say they will cancel a geothermal energy project, which three years ago caused minor tremors that damaged many buildings.”

“A risk analysis study published on Thursday found that the danger of setting off more earthquakes was too great if drilling at the site resumed.”

“The project was put on hold three years ago after thousands of claims for damage were filed with insurers. Total costs for the damage were around SFr9 million ($8.78 million).”

“The study, commissioned by the canton, concluded that Basel was ‘unfavourable’ for geothermal power generation.”

“It said the resumption of Deep Heat Mining project and its operation over a 30-year period could set off around 200 tremors with a strength of up to 4.5 on the Richter Scale – in 2006, the quakes were about 3.4.”

“This would result in damages up to SFr40 million.”

“The Basel facility drilled five kilometres into the earth. The borehole was designed to be injected with water to capture the extreme heat. Back at the surface, the hot water – at a temperature of around 160° Celsius – would run a steam turbine coupled with a generator.”

This Swiss article outlines the risks, and also confirms that deep water-injection is used in the geothermal process—which can and does trigger earthquakes.

Here is another reference—The Guardian, July 11, 2013: “Pumping water underground at geothermal power plants can lead to dangerous earthquakes even in regions not prone to tremors, according to scientists.”

“Prof Emily Brodsky, who led a study of earthquakes at a geothermal power plant in California, said: ‘For scientists to make themselves useful in this field we need to be able to tell operators how many gallons of water they can pump into the ground in a particular location and how many earthquakes that will produce’.”

“It is already known that pumping large quantities of water underground can induce minor earthquakes near to geothermal power generation and fracking sites. However, the new evidence reveals the potential for much larger earthquakes, of magnitude 4 or 5, related to the weakening of pre-existing underground faults through increased fluid pressure.”

“The water injection appears to prime cracks in the rock, making them vulnerable to triggering by tremors from earthquakes thousands of miles away. Nicholas van der Elst, the lead author on one of three studies published on Thursday in the journal Science, said: ‘These [injected] fluids are driving [earthquake] faults to their tipping point’.”

“The analysis of the Californian site showed that for a net injection of 500m gallons of water into the ground per month, there is an earthquake on average every 11 days.”

“Heather Savage, a co-author on the same study said: ‘It is already accepted that when we have very large earthquakes seismic waves travel all over the globe, but even though the waves are small when they reach the other side of the world, they still shake faults [such as the faults induced by geothermal water-injection]. This can trigger seismicity in seismically active areas SUCH AS VOLCANOES where there is already a high fluid pressure.” (emphasis added)

So, on the Big Island of Hawaii, where there is a massive volcanic eruption underway, there is a geothermal plant, PGV. How close to the volcano is PGV?

The Washington Post, May 12: “Long a concern for residents and the target of lawsuits challenging its placement ON AN ACTIVE VOLCANO, the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) is a major safety issue [i.e., chemicals stored at PGV] in the wake of the eruptions and earthquakes that have shaken the Big Island for days, government officials say.” (emphasis added)

I see. PGV is ON the volcano. Other reports claim PGV is 15 miles from the volcano. In either case, PGV is close, very close.

Who owns PGV? Ormat Technologies. Through internal merger and stock swapping, Ormat appears to be a jointly owned Israeli and US company now.

Ormat is no stranger to scandals. At blog.heartland.org, H Sterling Burnett writes (4/1/15): One scandal that could haunt [Harry] Reid for his remaining time in the Senate (and possibly beyond) was reported on recently in the Washington Free Beacon and Courthouse News. It seems the Reid helped the green energy company, Ormat Technologies, a firm that owns and manages geothermal plants in California and Hawaii, secure nearly $136 million in economic stimulus funding from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.”

“Two former employees are suing the firm, claiming Ormat executives defrauded the United States of more than $130 million by reporting false information about two projects to get government grants, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.”

“Reid’s ties to Ormat are deep. The company runs geothermal plants in Nevada and Reid has been a big booster of the company in D.C. As reported in the Free Beacon, ‘Reid bragged about securing Ormat a $350 million loan guarantee from the Department of Energy (DOE) and took credit for expanding the Treasury program that the former employees say illicitly provided Ormat with millions more in taxpayer funds’.”

“It is also worth noting that Ormat’s DOE award came a year after investors sued the company for allegedly inflating its stock price through ‘fraudulent accounting and overstated financial results.’ Ormat settled the allegations in 2012 for $3.1 million.”

Ormat potentially faces a much larger scandal now.

A massive volcanic eruption on the Island of Hawaii.

Maybe, maybe not, Hawaii was created from an active system.
Humans have been here only a short time, to the earth, it’s only been a blink of an eye.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ruling out fracking, I’m just keeping an open mind.

    • From Quebec says:

I think like you Kenneth, maybe, maybe not. Who knows? There has been an eruption of volcanos since the dawn of time.

I do not know much about ffracking, but if there is oil in the soil, it must be there for something. The only problem is to find a way to get to it in a way that is safe.

      • Joni Carleton says:

Number 1: The article is not referring to oil here, but geothermal – steam production.
Number 2: Please do more research on ‘fracking’ as this article gave excellent information regarding the negative effects of geothermal fracking.

  2. DAvid says:

Apparently the plant is owned by Rothschild. If it triggers the Hilina slump that would be the “black swan” event much rumoured. God’s speed all

    • Together Separately says:

Whoa. No doubt it’s a twisted thing if their name is involved. I’m sorry, but no doubts about fracking having to do with it. It’s an unwise practice that has made the world suffer greatly for quite some time niw.

  3. Dear Jon,

knowing the real meaning of fracking as Nuclear-Fracturing makes it very clear why and how any kind of fracking may cause earthquakes, fractures in the crust and volcanic eruption.

For that I would like to offer You the historic documentation about how fracking began and why it can ONLY be done by nuclear bombs.

Thank you for this information. I didn’t know about this.

I suspect that we have oil in the earth for a reason, to lubricate the movement of the plates. Removing it and replacing it with water will not work well, just as using water for lubrication instead of oil in your car is disastrous.

Once again, humans are charging ahead without caring about the consequences of their actions, nor even being interested in what they might be.

      • Lovebird Kenney says:

[…] The planet formed and the plates started slipping and sliding past each other long before there was even life, and oil is the result of millions of years of plant and animal materials being transformed under heat and high pressure.

Everytime you put gas in your car you’re basically putting a T-Rex in your tank.

          • NaturalWoman says:

This was very interesting and it makes sense, thanks. I read some time ago that oil companies conspired to say that oil came from plants and dinosaurs and that it was finite to get the public afraid so that they could jack up the price of oil. This was stated by a person who supposedly was there, but I no longer recall who it was. Yet this never seemed right when you consider the vast amount of oil we use compared to the amount of plants and dinosaurs buried in the earth compared to how deep the oil deposits are.

        • JB says:

Incredible there are still people who believe this myth.

Do you notice the similarity between fracking and vaccination? Both are harmful and against nature. Both have “experts” who claim that they are safe. Both cause real-life harm to mother earth and living creatures.

    • NaturalWoman says:

Meant to say both are “injections” that cause real-life harm to mother earth and living creatures.

“I see. PGV is ON the volcano. Other reports claim PGV is 15 miles from the volcano. In either case, PGV is close, very close.”

The whole Island is on the Volcano. The Island was made by volcanic action. The whole island is a volcano on the infamous Pacific ‘ring of fire’. Along with the other islands.

They are getting careless with their technologies.
The Fukishima event is an example of what can happen through this carelessness.

    • Mudhead Farmily says:

      Hawaiian here.
PGV is ON Kilauea volcano, but is 23 miles from Kilauea’s summit caldera (who’s active vent is called Halema’uma’u).

The whole island is not on THE volcano, it is on SIX VOLCANOES (Mahukona [submerged], Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, Kilauea, in order of age). The island is six distinct amd unique volcanoes, not one. And the Hawaiian islands are absolutely NOT ON the Ring Of Fire. Hawaii is in the center of the Pacific Plate, not at the edge of the plate, so we are 1000’s of miles from RoF.

Fracking or geothermal production did not cause the eruption, nor the slumping of Hilina Slump. Kilauea has been in constant eruption since 1983, and had several eruptions throughout the 1900s. The very location on which Leilani Estates sits, saw quite-similar eruptions to the current one, in 1960, 1955, 1924… all before PGV was ever thought of. The Hilina Slump has been slumping for millenia. In Nov 1975 Hilina Slump dropped into the ocean ELEVEN FEET in one movement, causing that corresponding 7.5 quake with a minor tsunami…all before PGV.

I have no love or alliance with PGV or any fracking, but facts are facts, and all these unfounded accusations and assumptions are fxckin inane.

The deep water injection undertaken at Hawaii’s Puna Geothermal Venture has already been shown to induce earthquakes and similar seismic activity.

    • It is not just “water injection”! Before water can be injected into a rock formation, this needs to be fractured by underground nuclear explosions! This is the real reason of the earthquakes!

  9. Gregster says:

The headline should say “Did fracking cause a volcano to erupt on an island continually built by volcanoes long before man was throwing rocks at the moon from his cave?”

  12. In NZ (1996) we had a massive eruption of Mt. Ruapehu within 24 hours of nuclear test blasting at Moreroa Atoll by the French, haven’t had one like it since. It seemed suspicious to me at the time. That was their last test…..

  13. Henry Horner says:

I’d be more inclined to think fracking had nothing to do with it — but the massive weight of liberal bullshit piling up everywhere created a gravitational imbalance. Drawing magma from many miles down, up to surface levels.

Did “Weather Warfare” cause the ‘waking” up of the volcano

Have you heard or SCALAR Directed Energy. What can it do combined with HAARP

Should we discount the FACT that Hawaii is talking about Independence?

Is it just a coincidence that when ANY country starts talking about Independence in any form, such as from Washington and/or the
Rothschild Banking system,STRANGE things including, but not limited to, WARS. Airplane crashes, severe weather or environmental events start happening???

It all started with Weather manipulation in the Vietnam INVASION, by America

Watch for Venezuela events to start,AGAIN, very soon.

    • Lovebird Kenney says:

      […]

The volcano did not “wake up”. The volcano has been continuously active since it first formed, millions of years ago. Large eruptions make the news, but the volcano has been “alive” all this time.

Thank you for the ownership outline.US geothermal projects used to be the exclusive fiefdoms of oil companies-with massive subsidies for little performance compared to say Iceland’s original program. So the “subsidies remain” but…
I’ll have to check other connections.
With a nearly direct Magma project such as this one-why would you use injection?
A capped pipe with a smaller pipe inside with insulation could blast out steam at almost a mile length.
injection with the mineral load contamination is for hot spring taps.

  19. Keanu says:

Well this could explain the volcanic activity I felt. I live in Hilo but the earthquake was big enough to shake the neighborhood and pretty much the rest of the island.

And I had a friend tell me that there was some operations going on that is causing all of those earthquake and volcanic activities. He told me something about an organization that’s boring holes under ground. What they’re doing, I don’t know. Reading this makes me assume he may be right.

  20. joyce Coley says:

I truly believe the geothermal plant helped cause the volcano eruptions in Hawaii by altering the natural cooling process of volcanic heat rising to the earth’s surface.

  21. I like this article, Jon.

I note you used the word TRIGGER in place of cause at the right time. You made your case (professionally) by saying “technical” industrial fracking triggered the recent Hawaiian volcano eruption.

Remember how daddy Bush boasted how the American people would have lynched him out of office if they knew the secrets they were hiding. One on those [poorly kept] “secrets” was Big Oil causes ALL cancers. That’s right. I’ll say that again. BIG OIL CAUSES ALL CANCERS.

Remove Big Oil, will illness dissipate or disappear altogether?

Not a chance. That’s because there are numerous triggers….glyphosate, vaccines, energy waves….and on and on. And the body reflects malice served on it, so most cancers would be replaced by “something else”, but there would be no cancers.

    Best
    OT

    • Lovebird Kenney says:

No, BIG OIL does not cause cancer. Cancer can be triggered by many things, can be genetic, or, it developes from causes we don’t yet know.

Cancer has been around since before the Stone Age. Evidence of cancer has been found as far back as prehistoric proto-humans.

      • Incorrect. Facts demonstrate otherwise. In fact the “rise of diagnosable” cancers followed the motor industry. I suggest you refer to statistics instead of gulping bullshit.

Check on the attack on “industry” of the 1860’s and 70’s and the emergence of the NEW condition “bronchitis”. Also review the effects of (illness generated by) mass coal (another CARBON based fossil fuel) fires over Victorian communities

“Cancer-like” symptoms I agree have been around since the “stone age” (whatever that is…..!) because the body deals with “issues” efficiently.

Cancers, specifically, are CAUSED (and NOT triggered) by a breakdown of reproductive DNA. As incompetent science cannot see DNA in “raw form”, fools like you can “witter”.

  22. Ed Wagner says:

    1) Iceland has been using geothermal energy successfully for over 50 years.

    2) New Zealand is also using it successfully

    3) Fracking has NEVER been used in Hawaii.

In Apr 2014, a complaint was filed against Hawaii Senator Russell Ruderman for introducing false & misleading legislation relating to fracking & development of geothermal energy & lying to the Hawaii Legislature, Community & County Council etc.

He was removed from the Senate Energy Committee after the above complaint was sent to 5 Hawaii Senators.

    4) PGV was always problematic because it was using 20 or 40 year old technology when it became operational. 21st century technology is quite different and safe. Like I said, Iceland and New Zealand use modern geothermal technology successfully.

    5) bottom line —— your article is highly biased and uses a false story line since fracking has never been used in Hawaii.

    • Lovebird Kenney says:

Thank you for this. Logic and sanity were very much needed.

    • Todd Millions says:

Iceland(originally) used scrapped pre WW1ship medium pressure turbines of two intermeshed counter rotating multiple bucket rows. The steam and wads of hot water fed in thru one of the rotating shafts. Despite seal issues in the feed these performed very well as low pressure turbines with wads of boiling mineral laden water punching thru the intakes. These units lasted for decades.
Since this was So effective at such a low cost-details were effectively suppressed for decades.
The modern replacements-Much higher cost and not so reliable.
Privatized makes this worse of course.
      How transferable?
That is the question. Volcanic islands where the remaining population has to cower along and too close to the seashore so the cliffs provide some shelter from lahar flows for 5 generations are somewhat rare.
Nonetheless the original geothermal conversion should have being a source of exportable expertise- to Japan for instance.
No aid or development funding would be allowed by bankster owned advisers for anything effective and useful of course.
That would interfere with the co-opting by Nuke A holes and their attached smuggling isreali “security ” blackmail/malware scams.
Unit 731 /TEPCO division would Not be pleased.
